Elementary ministry is for children in Kindergarten through 4th grade. We provide Sunday School from 9:45 - 10:45am each Sunday, and Children's Chapel during the 11:00am services. Elementary classes and Children’s Church are in the Dawson Building on the 2nd floor. The Elementary ministry is also part of the 1st Kids Ministry which includes ages 0-6th grade.

Dear 5th and 6th Grade Parents,

Welcome, welcome, welcome back to you and your student! Whether you’ve been here before with an older child or your completely new to this ministry, we will do our best to make the transition to Step Up as easy as possible this year. The Step Up Ministry is our preteen ministry for 5th and 6th graders only. Step Up is tons of fun and a great entrance into youth ministry. Most kids tell me they LOVE Step Up, and we hope that yours will love it, too!

Sunday School will resume on Sunday, September 20!

If you’re new to our church or to Step Up, let me share with you some highlights of what your student will experience in the Step Up Ministry:

  • • We are incredibly fortunate to have a Lay Leader, Denise Tindall, that loves our Step Up kids so much that she teaches almost every Sunday of the year. I only send out a request for subs when she will be out of town.
  • • Sunday School is held in a space created just for 5th and 6th graders. We call it The Loft and it is located on the roof level of the Hunter Building. Just get on the elevator that is near Bain Hall and go all the way to the top. It’s in the old swimming pool lounge!
  • • Sunday School is from 9:45 to 10:45 every Sunday. On the first Sunday of each month, Step Up meets at the Welcome Desk in the E&A Building to help with the Goodwill Collections for Local Missions.
  • • Breakfast is provided every Sunday in The Loft. They eat, talk and play games for the first part of class.
  • • We try very hard to have a social activity for the kids and their friends once a month. In the past it has been things like rock climbing, bowling, lock-ins at the church, an overnight retreat out of town, etc. Information on those activities will follow in a couple of weeks.

Things You Need to Know for Step Up (This list will be updated as things change.):

  • • Children, teens and adults will be expected to self screen (temperature check, symptom check, hand sanitize) prior to leaving home.
  • • Masks will be required for children 3rd grade and up, teens and adults.
  • • Sunday School starts at 9:45 each Sunday morning. o Students check themselves into class.
  • o Students do not have to be checked in and out by parents. The kids will be allowed to leave The Loft when Sunday School ends, so I suggest planning a meeting place for after Sunday School ahead of time.

How You Can Help!

  • • The kids love to have breakfast in the Loft every Sunday. Traditionally, parents sign up to provide breakfast two or 3 times a year. Change this year: Denise’s Step Up assistant/2nd set of eyes and hands will not be back this year due to Covid, so we would like to ask that parents sign up to bring breakfast and stay to assist Denise. You will be serving breakfast and visiting with the kids. It will be super easy, fun, and Denise always presents the lesson. Sign up here! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0B4EABAA2BA3FA7-step4
  • Volunteers are currently needed in all Kindergarten through 4th grade Sunday School classes as well as Children’s Chapel. Just because your student has moved on to Step Up doesn’t mean that we don’t need your help! We use a once a month rotation schedule, and we have subs that can be called on when needed. Lessons and activities are prepared for you, so there is very little preparation needed before Sunday. Our ministry solely revolves around volunteers, and the children love having you there to share their church experiences and growing faith with them! Grandparents and older siblings are always welcome to volunteer as well. Please let me know at szeagler@fumcshreveport.org or 318-469-5274 if you or anyone you know is available to help this year!

Acolyte training is for any student, who is 3rd grade and older, who would like to serve as an acolyte. 3rd and 4th graders are usually Candlelighters. 5th grades and up become a Crucifers and Banner Carriers.

Acolyte Training Information:

  • • Training will be held after church on September 27.
  • • Please RSVP by email to szeagler@fumcshreveport.org if your child will be attending.
  • • After church we will eat lunch together in room 208 of the Dawson Building. o I will order box lunches/kids meals for the kids from Cane’s. If your child cannot eat a Cane’s kids meal, please email me to let me know what I can substitute.

  • • A few older acolytes will be at the training to help show them what to do.
  • • Billie and I will train them and let them practice in the sanctuary from 12:30 to 1:30.
  • • Kids can be picked up in the sanctuary at 1:30.

I’m so happy that we are going to be back in our church building together soon! I pray that peace, blessings, health, and safety will be poured out upon you!
