•  News is dire to the south, as I’m sure you’ve all seen on the news and heard from your own friends and family in Ida’s path. ERT (Emergency Response Teams) have been called up and are heading out to serve in recovery efforts. Our local NWLA VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters) meets every afternoon at 4:30 following the daily statewide VOAD call at 3. We will fulfill needs a the Jewella Mega Shelter and the Bossier Special Needs shelter, both currently housing hundreds of people.  There is also pet shelter. DCFS is running the shelters. There are other groups of evacuees gathered in campgrounds and such and certainly many in local hotels. Stay connected to the latest information and ways to serve on the “Local Missions of First United Methodist” Facebook page.

  • If you’d like to donate to directly impact our south Louisiana neighbors impacted by Hurricane Ida, we have set up a fund at FUMC Shreveport. We will send every penny donated to a long term recovery group helping restore homes to livable conditions. We will only give to a group that does not take admin fees, meaning every cent is used for the homeowners. These will be homeowners who have exhausted any insurance, FEMA, and personal funds. Send donations to First United Methodist Church, 500 Common St, Shreveport, LA 71101, marked “Hurricane Ida” in the memo. You can also give online at on our church website: https://www.shelbygiving.com/app/giving/firstshreveport Please choose Local Missions/Serving Ministry as the Fund and write "Hurricane Ida" in the note section.

This will include training for chainsaw, muck and gut, tarping crews plus assessment training will be offered. You do not have to be a skilled laborer, only willing to be a compassionate, Christian presence in time of need. You do not have to be a member of the United Methodist Church. To sign up or for more information, please email Michelle Osborn: mosborn@fumcshreveport.org

If you missed this training, please look for the recorded meeting on the Facebook page.  Alert Michelle that you would like to be on the call-out list for volunteers.

  • CRISIS CLEANUP: A Home Cleanup Hotline has been opened to support survivors of Hurricane Ida. We anticipate that most volunteer groups will work through Friday, Sept 17, 2021. Survivors needing assistance can call 844-965-1386. Crisis Cleanup will connect you with volunteers with local relief organizations, community groups, and faith organizations who may be able to help. Assistance may include cut or fallen trees, drywall, flooring, and appliance removal, tarping roofs, and mold mitigation. All services are free, but not guaranteed due to the overwhelming need.

DSNAP: While DSNAP has not yet been approved for Hurricane Ida, you can pre-register now to get a head start on your application if DSNAP is approved for your parish. Visit dcfs.la.gov/preregister for more information.
